Last week the Florida Department of Law Enforcement released its Annual Uniform Crime Report for 2012. This yearly report tracks different kinds of criminal offenses in Florida, using that data to highlight statewide trends and determine what kinds of crimes are being committed where. This year’s report showed that, overall, crime has declined since last year.

In fact, the state saw its lowest crime rate since collection of crime statistics began 42 years ago. Between 2011 and 2012 the total number of crimes reported in Florida fell 5.7 percent. That means 43,546 fewer crimes were reported last year than the year before.

Violent crime fell as well, but slightly less sharply. The violent crime rate decreased by 4.3 percent, with 4, 218 violent crimes reported in 2012 than in 2011. However, statistics vary across the state. In Jacksonville, for example, more murders were reported in 2012 than 2011, up to 94 from 76. However, overall crime in Jacksonville still fell 4.9 percent.

These falling numbers may be a result of amped-up efforts by Florida’s law enforcement agencies. Prosecutors and police officers across the state have been working to cut down on crime and keep existing offenders off the streets and prevent them from committing additional offenses. Some experts have also attributed the drop to a higher level of community engagement across the state.

If you are facing criminal charges it is important to act quickly to protect your rights. Consider enlisting the help of an experienced criminal defense attorney who can help you review the charges against you, build an aggressive defense and protect your interests.
